Convenience (Lizard, Part 1)

Lizard didn't hate Cree. He was simply an easy target to pick on, provided Per wasn't waiting in the wings to rescue him. That was the one catch: Cree's gentle giant.

Lizard didn't hate any of the kids really. He hated the teachers, his parents, and most prominently of all, his elder brother. His older brother tormented him mercilessly everyday, and it was only through tormenting others that he found relief.

Slowly, he developed what felt like a sixth sense on when his brother was around, and it grew into detecting his teachers' intentions, and eventually Per. What he never understood was why...

He slumped back slowly and put his hands behind his head. A teacher was starting to look at him. Lizard opened his eyes, looked to the left out the classroom windows, and sighed. If they found him leaning forward, they might suspect him of falling asleep again, and his fingers instinctively tightened at the thought of the ruler banging down on them again.

Instead, unbeknownst to them, he was actually thinking. It was hard for him to puzzle out pieces and line them up into a cohesive conclusion, but as long as he wasn't interrupted...

Apparently it was going to have to wait. He decided absently to trouble Cree for a fight, and end up missing the bus. His folks would be too busy with work and their own lives to pick him up, so he would walk home, and that would give him time to think before Alvah started in on him.

The bell rang, and Lizard stumbled off to get to work.
